Description of Looking for Alaska by Green John

Looking For Alaska is the story of young Miles Halter's journey through the yearnings and heartbreak of adolescence, and the initial steps towards maturity.

Summary Of The Book

Looking For Alaska is the award winning first novel by John Green. It revolves around the characters of Miles Halter, his friend, The Colonel, and his other friend, the volatile Alaska Young.

Miles Halter, bored with his protected and uneventful life living with his parents, decides to break free. He loves reading biographies and quoting the last lines of famous people. His favorite last words are those of the poet Francois Rabelais, "I go to seek a Great Perhaps."

He convinces his parents to let him go to a boarding school in Alabama to seek his own "Great Perhaps". There, he meets Chip Martin, his roommate, who is nicknamed "The Colonel". The Colonel has his own quirky hobby, memorizing long alphabetical lists.

The Colonel gives the tall and thin Miles the improbable nickname of Pudge. He then introduces Miles to the beautiful and unpredictable Alaska Young. Alaska is a troubled, emotionally unstable teenager. Miles falls in love with her.

As the school year progresses, Miles and his friends face tests, pull off pranks and grow closer together. Miles also discovers the reason for Alaska's sometimes erratic behavior, a family tragedy that happened when Alaska was eight years old.

As the kids have fun and go though embarrassing experiences, and discover more about life and love, the story also moves fast towards the central event. The chapter titles in Looking For Alaska themselves serve as a sort of countdown and the aftermath of a central point. What happens affects each character in the story, and in one way or other, changes their views and attitudes towards life forever.
