Book Summary of Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas is noted for its unique narrative style, which earned it much acclaim as well as several awards. The theme of the novel states that predatory instincts rule the world - whether it is of an individual or a nation.
Summary Of Cloud Atlas
Cloud Atlas is a novel known for its imaginative narrative style. Written by David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas has six different narratives. The first one begins in 1850 and as the novel progresses, time moves forward. The sixth narrative is set in a post-apocalyptic future and ends in the middle of the novel. Time then moves backwards, and at the end of the book, the reader is back in the 1850s.
In short, the first five stories are arranged around the sixth one, which forms the center point of the novel. After the readers complete the sixth story, they realise that the second halves of all the other stories fall in place. Finally, the author ends the novel by bringing the protagonist back to the first narrative.
Yet another interesting detail of the writing style adopted by David Mitchell in the novel is that the six narratives cover a range of genres and encompass fantasy, noir, humor, and drama. Also, as each story unfolds, we realize that the character in it has either been an observer or had already read the previous story.
The six narratives in the book are The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing, Letters from Zedelghem, Half-Lives: The First Luisa Ray Mystery, The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish, An Orison of Sonmi~451, and Sloosha’s Crossin’ an’ Ev'rythin' After.
Readers will come across several interesting characters in these narratives: Adam Ewing - an American notary, Robert Frobisher - a poor English musician, Luisa Rey - a brave journalist, Timothy Cavendish - a vanity press publisher from UK, Sonmi~451- a clone server at Papa Song's diner, and Zachry - a tribesman.
The book won British Book Awards Literary Fiction award and the Richard and Judy Book of the Year. It was also shortlisted for the 2004 Booker Prize.
